AZLE — Cross Timbers fourth graders dished out holiday tunes to parents and peers with a concert celebrating the food of the Christmas season Dec. 5.
The event featured enthusiastic participation in various songs about students’ favorite holiday foods. The performance was led by Madison Witt, a music teacher of nine years, who has been at Cross Timbers Elementary School for four years. Witt and her fourth-grade students have been preparing and practicing songs about Christmas foods and festivities for the last two months. Witt thought the holiday food theme would make for a fun concert and her favorite dinner table accoutrement featured in the show was mashed potatoes.
“I'm proud of all of them,” Witt said. “They did such a good job. I've had most of them in class for a long time, so it was really nice. I think that getting to have music in their life is important for all of them. It's a joy that brings a light to each of them.”
In song, students declared what dishes they celebrated with. The usual fanfare was present along with evergreen favorites like pizza. Students would go on to sing “I Love Soup,” a jazzy bop about mashed potatoes and the dreaded “Everlasting Fruitcake.”
Fourth graders performed several times throughout the day, holding afternoon concerts for different student groups and an evening concert for parents and other family members. Cross Timbers students are done singing for this year but will return to the delight of their parents and peers with more concerts in May and April 2025.
